Meet Ginger, she's pretty rad.

Meet Ginger, the exuberant and passionate owner of Gingerly Wax in South Park. We love Ginger for her frank yet compassionate advice on everything in life, including the waxing table! Her lust for life and hugely successful business have always drawn us to her, and we are excited to let her dish about her life and the world of waxing.

The Interview

Jaclyn Najjar: How long have you been an esthetician, and how long have you owned Gingerly Wax?
Ginger Rees: I have been an aesthetician since 2005 and I opened Gingerly Wax seven years ago.

JN: What inspired you to get into the beauty industry?
GR: I was going through a transitional time in my life and was a stay at home mom. I remember having a conversation with a few other mothers about needing a job. One of the mothers replied “maybe you should think about a career; find something you would really enjoy.” Another friend said that cosmetology might be a good idea for me. She told me “you can make good money, the hours are flexible, and you get to chat with people,” which I love. So I thought what the heck. Soon after starting cosmetology school I found that I loved hair removal!

JN: Of all the procedures that estheticians do, waxing seems to be the scariest one. What made you decide to specialize in it? What does it take to be a great waxing specialist?
GR: Yes, waxing does seem to be the scariest and the Brazilian is on the top of the list. After working in a spa downtown while I was in school and shortly there after, another friend told me of a place that was hiring and specialized in waxing. I interviewed and got the job and was there for over 3 years mastering speed waxing and specializing in the Brazilian. I was doing at least 25 Brazilians a day. Not only do you get a wide variety of clients, you are able to master your bedside manner. The other obvious is that if you can do four Brazilians in an hour... you can make some pretty good cashola! To become a great waxing specialist you absolutely have to be a genuine people person and completely 100% percent comfortable working with people that are naked. They are exposing themselves not only physically but also mentally. You have to be able to make that person feel at ease. I tend to do that with humor and song.

JN: What are the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to waxing, and what can they do to make the waxing experience better?
1. Tweezing your eyebrows too far in on the glabella - When in doubt, don’t.
2. Shaving - Don’t shave in between waxes.
3. Not exfoliating – Exfoliate the area every day or every other day.
4. Trimming your pubic hair - Let us do the trimming; we’re the experts.
5. Tweezing your eyebrows while trying to grow them out - be patient, leave them be.

JN: Any brow tips to help us all look fresh and youthful?
GR: I have always been a big believer in leaving your eyebrows as natural as possible. I’ve never been one to pay attention to trends. Unfortunately we may have a trend where they are pencil thin and then the next trend goes back to the thicker, fuller brow and some may not be able to grow them back... I’ve seen it. I believe you can look more youthful simply by keeping your natural shape.

JN: Gingerly Wax is known for its fun approach to the salon life, what inspired you to start posting karaoke style videos?
GR: I came out of the womb singing. It just comes natural to me—I sing anywhere and everywhere so it made sense to just keep singing at work. My impromptu verses started in the waxing room basically from day one. On a particularly stormy day I came out of the waxing room and found that most of the clients had canceled that day because of the thunderstorms and resulting traffic. ”HELP” by the Beatles was playing and I starting singing “help, you know I need a client, help not just any client, help you know I need one now, help... Thus, the first official video was born! I have so much fun doing them that I am starting a YouTube channel! Whenever I interview a potential employee one of my questions “Can you sing or dance?” because the entire staff has fun doing the videos.

JN: Gingerly Wax now has 2 locations and was named the best waxing salon in San Diego 2 years in a row! How does it feel to be among the best?
GR: We have been very blessed to be one of the number one waxing salons on yelp on and off since the beginning! If there is ever a citywide contest we have always been in the top five, and sometimes we make runner up. I want to say I don’t really care, but I do have a major competitive side. All I do know is without a doubt I believe I have the best employees, the best clients, and the best fellow business owners in the best community in town so the awards don’t matter.

JN: What services does your team offer at Gingerly Wax?
GR: We offer full body waxing services for both men and women, except the male Brazilian. Most of us have performed a male Brazilian however we are not experts and I cannot put something on my menu that I don’t feel hundred percent comfortable with, plus I am sure that our male client will appreciate this as he would like to keep his testicles intact. Ha!

JN: Are there any new or off-menu services that you are excited to be offering?
GR: We are now offering Sugaring (a natural type of hair removal) and Skin Care services. Who knows, I may hire someone in the future to do the male Brazilian since we get calls for it all the time!
