Energy Balancing 101 Series: In this series, we explore some of the more popular ways people are finding better balance in their mind and body connections, utilizing the technique of Reiki, and the understanding of Chakras and Crystals.
I really knew little to nothing about Reiki until I went in for my massage with Virgil Sim. He performs Reiki as part of the massage journey for his clients, and because I left feeling energized and full of mental energy (which was my intention), my interest was piqued.
But What Is It?
According to Google's Dictionary, Reiki is "a healing technique based on the principle of channeling energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient's body and restore physical and emotional well-being."
Who wouldn't want those results? And what's more incredible is Reiki often involves hands just placed near the body (without touching) as the Reiki practioner allows energy to flow freely between them and the client.

Reiki is Spiritual, Not Religious
One of the best things about Reiki is that it's a practice that requires the belief in energy that flows through you, but it can be incorporated into any spiritual tradition that believes in a life force or energy to the world. The one thing that Reiki practioners share (they often come from different religious and spiritual backgrounds) is the belief in promoting harmony in all aspects of life.
Reiki and Chakras
As we have been learning (learn more about Chakras Here), many traditions believe in several spiritual centers of the body. The 7 Chakras are the most widely used. Chakras are often opened simply by meditating with intention, and Reiki is a more acute way of aiding this process.
The Origins of Reiki: Mikao Usui
Reiki Practice was created by Japanese therapist Mikao Usui (1865-1926) around the turn of the 20th century. He is reverentially referred to as Usui Sensei, and Reiki most often refers to the technique that he himself developed. That being said, Reiki style energy healing wasn't new in Japan before Mikao Usui came along. In fact, most people would say that Japan's knowledge of Reiki-like energy (although there wasn't a specific name for it) has been around for thousands of years, and many spiritual traditions around the world have a knowledge of spiritual energy that can be harnessed.
What Mikao Usui was simply able to successfully translate the techniques of harnessing life force energies for healing and guidance. He was known as a healer but was able to teach his methodology to his students, and thus Reiki as we know it today was born.
Reiki and Massage: Enhancing the Healing
One of the easiest ways to incorporate Reiki into one's life is via a massage therapist. One thing I noticed after my Reiki-Included massage, is the feeling of relaxation and invigoration simultaneously. Reiki was helping to open my body's energy flow, releasing tension and energetic blockages, and allowed my intentions to easily flow into action. By choosing a therapist who can perform Reiki as part of the massage treatment, you are really amping up the healing power of the massage itself.
